[Arkady beams hello and sticks the bundle with her brownies into the air with both hands.] I saved the package!

[And the rooster nudges closed the door.]

[She bounces up in a flurry of skinny limbs.] Brownies! Not the magic kind but they're so rich they're black.

[The rooster wanders up to Faith's bed and peers up at her. Bok.]

Oh, Bertie Rooster does that. He likes to check out people before he lets his wife snuggle them.

[Actually his wife comes around the bedpost about now and hops up onto the bed--a fat red hen in some sort of diaper contraption. She cackles softly and snuggles in.]

Brownies?

Sure. [Not special, right? And she'll chomp on one or two...]

[They are ordinary brownies, but heavily chocolated, not too sweet and very gooshy.]

I sometimes have no idea what to say, but I can always bake brownies.

She hesitated, then fished out a brownie, biting into it. It tasted... "Good."
